What teams are in the Big Ten Conference?

With the latest additions of Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington, the Big Ten conference contains 18 teams. The full list:

Here is a glance at each team’s standing after last season.

Illinois Fighting Illini

The Fighting Illini haven’t been able to figure out their footing for quite some time. Their best mark in the past 14 years came with an eight-win campaign in 2022. Before that, you’ll have to stretch as far back as the 2007 team that finished 9-4. You remember them, right? They knocked off top-ranked Ohio State in the Horseshoe.

Indiana Hoosiers

The Hoosiers have been a punching bag for the conference’s elite programs. After a solid showing in 2020, the program has free-fallen into chaos. They are 3-24 against Big Ten competition in the last three years. Their lone conference win last year came against Wisconsin.

Iowa Hawkeyes

Perhaps college football’s most puzzling team. The Hawkeyes are known for their elite defense while being hamstrung with one of the most inept offenses in college football. That cocktail somehow resulted in a Big Ten championship game appearance last season. The Hawkeyes finally parted ways with offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz and will welcome in Tim Lester to jumpstart the offense.

Iowa has put together two 10-win campaigns in the last three seasons.

Maryland Terrapins

Since joining the Big Ten, Maryland has had some rough sledding. The Terps are on the rise though with two eight-win seasons. Their product is a competitive brand that has caused some fits in the league.

Michigan Wolverines

What more is there to say about a program who has slayed their fierce rival three years in a row and capped off the incredible reversal of fortune with a national championship. Losing nearly two dozen pieces to the NFL, including their starting quarterback JJ McCarthy and head coach Jim Harbaugh, is the biggest obstacle for the Wolverines. Michigan has compiled a 26-1 record in conference play in the last three years.

As always “The Game” looms large in November.

Michigan State Spartans

A once proud program has fallen upon tough times. The Spartans fired head coach Mel Tucker after allegations surfaced of sexual harassment. The Spartans proceeded to lose six straight games and finish with a 4-8 record. They are 5-14 in conference play the last two years.

Minnesota Golden Gophers

After back-to-back nine-win campaigns, the boat became rocky (6-7) for head coach PJ Fleck and the Golden Gophers. The schedule is even more daunting, making that nine-win mark a deeper challenge.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

There is a wave of energy over Lincoln, Nebraska, right now. The amped up fanbase is expecting big things after receiving an unlikely commitment gem in five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola. The Cornhuskers have slowly been building their program from the ground up, including a five-win campaign in 2023.

Northwestern Wildcats

The Wildcats have been struggling to exit the basement of the Big Ten but broke through with an admirable 8-5 showing last season. The influx of talent from the west will only hinder those efforts going forward. They’ll host Ohio State at Wrigley Field on Nov. 16 in a unique rendition of the Big Ten encounter.

Ohio State Buckeyes

If there was such thing as a greatness purgatory, the Buckeyes have had an extended stay. They have become an elite program that falls short once or twice a year, keeping them from the ultimate goal. Those troubles have been compounded with three straight losses to rival Michigan. The rivalry has shifted. A fourth straight loss could spell the end of an era in Columbus.

Head coach Ryan Day is 56-8 in five seasons with the Buckeyes.

Oregon Ducks

The Ducks are one of the most intriguing teams in the conference. Led by Heisman contender Dillon Gabriel, Oregon is eager to test themselves against the power of the Big Ten. The last time the Ducks failed to win at least 10 games was 2021 when they won four.

Penn State Nittany Lions

The Nittany Lions have grown tiresome of being overlooked behind Michigan and Ohio State. Penn State has put together back-to-back seasons of 10 wins or more but they are a combined 0-4 against the Wolverines and Buckeyes. In fact, if you take away those four games, Penn State has put together back-to-back undefeated regular seasons.

Purdue Boilermakers

Two recent strong campaigns gave way to a letdown performance last season. The Boilermakers mustered just four wins in 2023, claiming victories over Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana and Virginia Tech.

Rutgers Scarlett Knights

The Knights continue to try and make an impact in the Big Ten. They are coming off their most wins since 2014 with a 7-6 record. The three conference wins were against Northwestern, Michigan State and Indiana. The prior two years saw a combined 3-15 eye sore in conference play from Greg Schiano’s bunch.

Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers are digging for results of old. The hole is empty though. They have put together two consecutive 7-6 campaigns. This will be the first full year under head coach Luke Fickell. Can he return them to a formidable foe in the conference?

UCLA Bruins

Welcome to the show, UCLA. The Bruins are hoping to enter into a new era and shed the shadow of its big brother, USC, who has followed them to the new scenery. They found their footing under former head coach Chip Kelly, reeling off three consecutive seasons of eight wins or more. Deshaun Foster has taken over the head coaching duties after Kelly left to become the co-offensive coordinator at Ohio State.

USC Trojans

Lincoln Riley brings the high-profile Trojans into the Big Ten after the program has endured some average campaigns at best. After years of pummeling inferior PAC 12 opposition, USC flailed out in its final years with the conference, finishing a combined 23-16 since 2021. As the expectations ratchet up, a fresh start and a brutal slate awaits.

Washington Huskies

The national runner-up lost coach DeBoar to Nick Saban’s throne in Alabama and star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to the NFL, but the Huskies can still make an impact as they settle into their new conference. They will get a chance for revenge when they host defending national champion Michigan on Oct. 5.
